On August 17, 2020, the City Council of the City of Brooksville adopted Resolution 2020-13 informing residents about the potential harm of using tobacco products and vaping and encouraged residents to maintain vape and tobacco-free environments.
he City of Brooksville’s Official Tobacco Use Policy 1-2001-A acknowledges hazards from exposure to environmental tobacco smoke and declares a tobacco free environment for all employees and visitors. This policy covers the smoking of any tobacco product and the use of smokeless (including electronic cigarette devices) or “spit” tobacco by both employees and nonemployee visitors of City while on City owned premises, with an exception of designated areas, or while in City owned vehicles.
According to the 2006 U.S. Surgeon General’s report, “The Health Consequences of Involuntary Exposure to Tobacco Smoke”, secondhand smoke causes coronary artery disease, asthma attacks, heart disease, heart attacks, stoke and lung cancer in adults and sudden infant death syndrome, middle ear infections, bronchitis, asthma, pneumonia, and low birth weight in children. Secondhand smoke is especially dangerous to children whose bodies are still developing and who are particularly vulnerable to the poisons of secondhand smoke. Another significant issue with tobacco smoking in City parks is litter consisting of used cigarette filters, also known as “cigarette butts” which contain hazardous substances that can be toxic to animals.
Effective July 1, 2022, the Florida Legislature enacted Ch. 2022- 213 Laws of Florida which permits municipalities and counties to restrict smoking in local parks. By prohibiting smoking in City parks, frequented by children and adults, will help to reduce smoking related illnesses and serve as a means to improve health outcomes for residents and visitors to Brooksville. With the passing Ordinance No. 962, the City of Brooksville prohibits smoking, vaping and use of electronic cigarettes in the City’s public parks. Therefore, reducing exposure to secondhand smoke, assuring cleaner and more hygienic parks. Ultimately providing a better environment for public health, safety and welfare, of the City’s residents, visitors and animals .
