All City of Brooksville government facilities will be closed on Tuesday, October 8, through Wednesday, October 9, 202, due to Hurricane Milton. This closure will include all City government offices, parks and the cemetery.
The following measures are in place as a result of the closing:
- Residential garbage collection will be adjusted as follows:
- Tuesday, October 8, 2024, garbage collection will continue, winds permitting.
- Wednesday, October 9, 2024. The Sanitation Department will be closed. No sanitation services will be available.
- Please note Wednesday’s residential route will NOT be made up.
- Thursday and Friday sanitation services are yet to be determined.
- The City sandbag site is open for the City of Brooksville residents and will remain open until weather conditions begin to deteriorate. The self-serve site is located at 600 S. Brooksville Ave. and is open 24 hours a day. There is a limited supply of sandbags and residents are asked to take only what they need and leave the shovels for the next resident to use. There is a limit of ten (10) bags per resident. To be considered a resident, individuals must reside within the City limits of Brooksville. All individuals that reside outside the City limits are encouraged to utilize the Hernando County Sandbag Sites.
- City staff are in the process of normal operations for solid waste collection and continuing clean-up efforts by removing debris from Hurricane Helene. The normal water related emergencies will be in affect and residents may call (352) 540-3860. The Department of Public Works, to include Utilities, will not respond to any calls where there are dangerous or hazardous conditions.
- Mandatory evacuation order have been announced to start at 8:00 AM on Tuesday, October 8, 2024. Residents seeking safe shelter are encouraged to arrive at their planned location by 12pm on Wednesday, October 9, 2024.
Mandatory Evacuations have been issued for all areas west of US 19, which includes evacuation zones A, B, and C. All residents living in coastal and low-lying areas, as well as manufactured homes county wide, are included. Shelters should be utilized as a last resort. Residents are advised to seek shelter with family or friends that reside in a safe structure. If this is not a possibility, a public shelter will open at 8am on Tuesday, October 8, 2024 at the below address.

*If you are needing the Special Needs Shelter and have a pet, transportation from either your house or shelter location for your pet is done through Animal Control with Hernando County Sheriff’s Office. Please call Hernando County Public Information Center (PIC) at 352-754-4083 to arrange pick up. The PIC is open 8am-5pm on Monday, 7am on Tuesday and then open 24/7 until further notice.
The City of Brooksville encourages residents to act immediately to prepare yourself, friends, and family if you plan to stat and ride out a potential storm. For manufactured homes and low-lying areas, please make the necessary arrangements to evacuate to a safer locale.
